The local health unit is encouraging university and college students to get an H1N1 vaccine through a new campaign called Join the Resistance.
The campaign is released as vaccination clinics are held this week on the campuses of Trent University and Fleming College.
"I strongly encourage them to get vaccinated at the clinics we have planned on their campuses this week as they head into a very stressful time of year with midterms and exams around the corner. The last thing they need is to get sick with the flu and jeopardize their studies," medical officer of health Dr. Rosana Pellizzari stated in a release.
H1N1 has struck young people especially hard because it is a novel strain and hospitalization rates among people under 20 years old are higher, Pellizzari stated.
"We've seen the highest rates of influenza illness in children and young adults. And, because of the ways young people socialize, we tend to see influenza spread quickly among these age groups. Before you know it, they'll be bringing influenza home to the rest of the family for Christmas," Pellizzari stated.
NOTE:MPPJeff Lealwill receive his H1N1 vaccination tomorrow at Fleming College.
