The International Dragon Boat Festival will bring 73 teams of dragon boaters, and breast cancer survivors, to Little Lake on June 11 to 13. Here's a short look at who's coming and from where.
PINK SENSATIONS, PICKERING
The Pink Sensations have been a breast cancer survivor dragon boat team since the spring of 2004. We currently have 28 members that paddle hard to beat the dragon. Our team has had the privilege to travel across Ontario, Canada and as far as Australia to promote breast cancer awareness. Through donations from people like you, we are able to continue our vision of living a full life after breast cancer. Part of our travel to other community dragon boat festivals is to help encourage survivors to participate in a physical activity as well as providing support for our own team members and other people affected by breast cancer.
PINK SNAPDRAGONS, REDCLIFFE, QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA
The team's founder, Jayne Coe, was diagnosed with breast cancer in September 2004, and during chemotherapy treatment her mother gave her a magazine article about Dragons Abreast Australia. Jayne loved the idea, and after her second chemotherapy session, she joined the
Redcliffe Dragon Boat Racing Club and began paddling with them, as their first breast cancer survivor member.
In May 2005, it was decided it was time to create a breast cancer survivor team as part of the club. Jayne chose the name Pink Snapdragons for something pretty and feminine for herself and for future members to really feel like women. Pink snapdragons flowers, which are featured on our club banner, are also strong and long lasting. After a second diagnosis of breast cancer and subsequent treatment, we are proud to have Jayne on board as a competitor in this regatta.
PITTWATER PINKS, SYDNEY, NORTHERN BEACHES, NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA
The Pittwater Pinks are a Dragon Boat Crew of cancer survivors formed in 2005 as part of the Bei Loon Dragon Boat Club located at Rowland Reserve, on the beautiful Pittwater shores of the Northern Beaches of Sydney Australia. Representing the Manly, Warringah and Pittwater areas, we are currently the only Breast Cancer Survivor Crew in Sydney, North of the Harbour.
Starting off with a few paddlers we continue to grow and now have 30 members. We train two or three times a week often circumnavigating Scotland Island.
