For the 6th consecutive year, the PCVS Grade 10 arts students' banners hang high on downtown Hunter St. Together with the DBIA, students created 20 dragon themed banners of power and hope, so make sure you take a walk on Hunter St. over the next 19 weeks to check them out.
Artist Justine Landry entitled her banner "The Ancient". The front of the two-sided banner is "meant to convey the long lasting hope for breast cancer patients and survivors. The back portrays the survivors' joy and their eagerness to help the younger patients," says Justine.
"I am happy to add to the beauty of our community and to wish all the dragon boaters well." Justine added that she wants to work in the arts as an art historian, graphic designer or animator after finishing her education. Remember to look up when you're on Hunter St. on the way to the Dragon Boat races.
Market Hall camps
Yes. Market Hall is running summer drama camps this year even though the Hall is closed for renovations. They are reopening in March 2011. The 11th year of camps run from July 5 to August 27 and include old favourites in drama, dance, comedy and music and its rock 'n roll camp for boys and girls aged 10 and over, with instructor Charlie Glasspool. A brand new the camp called Mything In Action focuses on Greek mythology with instructor Janette Platana.
The dance and theatrical programs will be held at the large gym at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church and the music camps at Sadleir House. St. Paul's is located at 120 Murray St. at Water St. This spacious facility has a raised stage with theatrical lighting and will offer an experience for campers similar to what they would get at the Market Hall. Sadleir House (formerly Peter Robinson College) is located at 751 George St., just north of Parkhill Rd.
There will be eight one-week drama camps for children as young as five years old. The camps will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., from Monday to Friday.
"Every Friday, participants take to the Market Hall stage to showcase their week's work and receive their certificates. This is always a highlight of the week and lots of fun," says general manager Bill Kimball.
All camps cost $145. There are family rates and subsidized spaces. Register at the temporary Market Hall offices, located at 160 Charlotte St., Suite 203 or by mail or fax. Office hours are 9a.m. to 1 p.m. from Monday to Friday. For further information, call Market Hall at 749-1146 or visit www.markethall.org.
