Brothers Shawn and Scott Evans have differing motivations but a common goal of a championship driving them this summer.
Shawn is in a battle for his first Major Series Lacrosse scoring title and Scott is working his way back to form from knee surgery.
They hit on all cylinders Sunday combining for 17 points to help the Peterborough Lakers crush the Ajax-Pickering Rock 16-8 before 2,627 fans at the Memorial Centre.
The first place Lakers (13-2-0) will complete their regular season 8 p.m. Thursday hosting the Rock. They will then get a first-round playoff bye.
Shawn's four goals and five assists give him 73 points tying him with Brampton's Josh Sanderson for the league lead. Each player has one regular season game left. Evans won a scoring title and was runner-up twice in junior.
"It's always a goal, but the biggest goal is to win a championship," Shawn Evans said. "The biggest goal at the end of the year is to celebrate with my teammates."
Scott Evans has two scoring titles under his belt, but he came into this season trying to prove he could still play at a high level. Knee surgery in January 2009 forced him to miss an entire NLL season and
most of the Lakers' season last year. He couldn't get his game on track with the Lakers or this past NLL season with the Rochester Knighthawks. Lakers' coach/GM Jamie Batley wouldn't even guarantee him playing time prior to this season saying Evans had to prove he could still play.
He's done that climbing to fifth in league scoring with 31 goals and 61 points while playing all 15 games.
"I'm working my way back," Evans said, after getting three goals and five assists. "I'm close. There is still work to be done. Everyone I have talked to who has had a bad injury says it takes a full year to get back to where you want to be."
He says he fought rust all season in Rochester and admits he began doubting himself.
"You start second guessing yourself," he said. "There are glimpses and you think 'Yeah, I still have it.' You just want to do it on a more consistent basis and that's where I'm getting to."
He scored a first period hat trick as the Lakers ran up an early 6-1 lead and were up 12-4 after two periods.
NOTES:Peterborough natives Zac McIlmoyleandJesse Guerinhelped the Rock keep the score somewhat respectable. McIlmoyle had a goal and three assists and Guerin four assists for the young Rock... For fan appreciation night the Lakers returned to the floor following the game to sign autographs... The Lakers called upBrad Holborough from the Champs Sports Bar & Grill senior Bs and he scored a goal playing his second game of the day and first with the Lakers.
